Abstract

Global warming caused by the greenhouse effect is a substantial problem in current society. One of the gasses that constitute the greenhouse effect by forming atmospheric traps preventing heat from escaping is CO2 emission. The Rijksuniversiteit of Groningen(RUG) desires to limit their negative impact on the environment and, therefore, strives for CO2 neutrality by 2020. Operations that contribute to their CO2 footprint are RUG staff commuting and RUG flight travel under 700 kilometres. This study provides recommendations on reduction and compensation methods for RUG staff commuting and RUG flight travel under 700 kilometres to strive for CO2 neutrality. The current CO2 footprint of staff commuting calculated over 2017 is 3000 tonCO2 and for RUG flight travel under 700 kilometres 87 tonCO2. Recommended is to eliminate the staff commuting CO2 footprint of the total RUG CO2 footprint. Other recommended reduction methods for commuting are; realizing a shift away from car use to other transport methods, promoting sustainable car use and advocating the methods with a behavioural campaign. Furthermore, reduction methods advised for RUG flight travel under 700 kilometres are; a shift to either teleworking or railway travel and if inevitable fly as efficient as possible. Lastly, recommended is to compensate the unavoidable CO2 emission with a carbon offset company. Conclusively, the methods provided in this report can reduce and compensate the CO2 footprint of RUG flight travel under 700 kilometres and RUG staff commuting by 2020.
