Abstract

We investigate higher derivative theories of quantum gravity. In particular we study a new prescription to make gravitational theories quadratic in the curvature, shown by Stelle to be renormalizable, into unitary theories. The prescription, designed by Anselmi et al., turns the ghosts that are present in higher derivative gravity, into a new type of particles, namely fakeons. This not directly observable particle appears in loops and thus contributes to the renormalization of the theory, but does not appear in the asymptotic states, so it does not contribute to the S-matrix of the theory.
