Abstract

This essay discusses the two main secretion pathways of Bacillus subtilis. The inidividual components and their interactions, as well as chaperones and extracellular proteases are reviewed in the context of their importance to expressing heterologous proteins in high amounts. Finally, the steps taken by biotechnologists to improve these pathways for industrial or medical uses are listed.
