Abstract

To either advance our confidence in theStandard Model, or to invite newextensions, it is interesting to measure the value of the electron electric dipolemoment (e-EDM). The standard model suggests this value less than 10−38ecm. To measure an EDM of this magnitude, an experiment was set up. Thisinvolves decelerating and cooling heavy polar molecules. The deceleration isdone using aStark Decelerator. As particles enter the decelerator and slowdown, a portion of this particles is lost due to them escaping the velocitytraps when their kinetic energy is too high, or due to instability of theparticles as they are decelerated. In this thesis, the effects of several changesto the deceleration methods are measured. This is done through simulationsoftware rather than running the actual decelerator.
