Abstract

Harbors situated in estuaries have to deal with unwanted deposition of sediment (siltation) in its basins and fairways due to tidal currents and gradients in salinity, temperature and sediment concentration. This inhibits the passage of ships. To keep their channels and fairways accessible, annual dredging operations are executed. The Eemshaven harbor is situated in the Ems-estuary. In this harbor, 1.5 million cubic meters of mud is removed annually. This practice is very expensive and can have negative effects on the environment. This study analyzes the system of the Ems-estuary in terms of the transport of sediment. Specifically, it focuses on the exchange of water and sediment between the estuary and the Eemshaven harbor. Subsequently, several structural measures as described in literature are proposed to reduce this exchange and limit the siltation rate. This study found that a Current Deflection Wall can decrease the siltation rate between 15 and 22%. Furthermore, combining the CDW with a sill leads to a siltation reduction between 18 and 55%. Additionally, pile groynes can lead to a reduction of 53%. Lastly, the Passive Nautical Depth method can lead to a reduction in siltation of 10% and an Active Nautical Depth can result in a 100% reduction. This research is the basis for a follow-up modelling research which can use the obtained qualitative data of the estuarine system to assess the effectiveness of the siltation mitigation measures.
