Abstract

Psoriasis is a chronic auto-immune disease characterized by excessive inflammation in which interleukins play a large role. However, psoriasis has several comorbidities and there is no cure available yet. Therefore, the urgency to develop new pharmaceutical agents to treat this condition is emphasized. This literature research focusses on the details of the pathology and the relevance of interleukin-17, interleukin-6 and interleukin-23 in moderate-to-severe plaque-type psoriasis by providing a thorough overview on the pharmacology and dynamics of these cytokines and how they are interlinked. Moreover, biologicals targeting the interleukin axis will be argued with respect to their application in psoriasis as well as new techniques that are in prospect to treat patients suffering from psoriasis.
