Abstract

It is widely accepted that a reduction in global Carbon Dioxide emissions is necessary for combating Climate Change. There are two main economic approaches that governments take to incentivise these reductions; Carbon Taxes and Cap-and-trade systems. In this paper the impact of both emission reduction approaches on the CO2 emissions of the electricity production industry are compared. These comparisons are carried out using an agent-based model, comparing both of the approaches in a variety of settings. This research aims to show the value of each approach, as well as the ideal manner of implementation and serves as a stepping stone to deeper research into the topic.
