Abstract

This thesis considers the feasibility of the branching fraction measurements of the Bc -> tau nu and Bu -> tau nu decays at LHCb during run 3. Both signals are reconstructed using the tau -> 3pi nu mode. Besides the signal decays, there are many background modes mimicking the signal. A measurement is only feasible if the signal decays are not dominated by unwanted backgrounds. For that purpose, an exhaustive background list is presented. Based on both the estimated yield and corrected mass distribution, the most dangerous background is shown to be Bu -> D 3pi. The significance to observe the Bc -> tau nu and Bu -> tau nu in the worst-case scenario was shown to be larger than 5.6 and 9.6 sigma, respectively. Therefore, measurements on the branching fractions of both signals are feasible.
