Abstract

This thesis started when we decided to take a look into the theory concerning upper bounds for the minimal distance of self-dual codes. There is an extensive literature about these upper bounds for example [6], [10] and [7] deal with this kind of bounds. As an example we decided to start by considering self-dual codes that are also cyclic. These codes appear to have so many interesting properties that we decided to make them the center of the thesis. In the second chapter we present some basic coding theory. In the next two chapters we give some theory of cyclic codes and of self dual codes. In the fourth chapter we will introduce the cyclic self-dual codes and give a lower bound for the minimal distance. In the last chapter we will deal with the upper bound for the minimal distance.
