Abstract

During the study Indust rial Engineering and Management there is at tent ion for theories and models. During the phase in which this thesis is writ ten, the focus has been on implement ing these theories and models in pract ice. Dealing with everyday problems in a complex and large factory emphasizes the importance of many of these models. Unfortunately many theories in literature are only applied in small part icular cases. In this masters thesis is shown how organizat ional and technical factors altogether add up to the performance of an organizat ion. This is done by applying several techniques and by understanding the importance and implications of parameters and the relations between these parameters. Knowing the problem is only a small part of an improvement . Applying changes in a complex factory implies knowledge of the technical installat ions. One needs to understand how the product reacts on a certain change in its creation process. It is also important to know what the market will do in the future. Another factor is the willingness of the staff to change. Balancing between these types of issues is typical for the study Industrial Engineering and Management. The process engineering side of my study has however led to a greater understanding of the factory. There are many problems that are easy to explain to one that knows how flows work. During my work I found out that due to this, many of the assumpt ions made were in fact good estimations of reality. Finally I would like to thank my supervisors, dr. D.P. van Donk and prof. dr. A.A. Broekhuis of the University of Groningen and J.G.H. Maathuis and P. Beemsterboer at Friesland Foods Supply Point Beilen. They have all been a great help in the execut ion of my masters thesis. I also want to thank the rest of the staff at Friesland Foods Supply Point Beilen, these have also been very helpful in performing my research.
