Abstract

In criminology, two types of organized crime are found: a hierarchical type, with clear roles and a pyramidal structure (traditional mafia), and a more flexible type, with less hierarchy and flexible configurations. By making a multi agent model I tried to gain insights in how the cooperations work in these criminal organisations, and particularly on what causes the two different types. Three factors are investigated: the role of the initialisation of the model, the role of the amount of experts and the influence of the cooperation threshold (how critical agents are when choosing their colleagues). The results do not show a clear relation between the initialisation and the amount of experts on the hierarchy of the network. However, the segmentation of the network does seems to depend on the cooperation threshold. This could point at the fact that a different level of distrust may be the cause of the two types of organized crime.
