Abstract

Changes in the size of the human eye pupil can be caused by various cognitive processes. Recent studies have revealed that the eye pupil dilates just before switching to a secondary task during a sequential multitasking experiment. One way to explain the pupil dilation is the planning involved in the decision to switch. In the experiment, participants were asked to play several games of Concentration, consisting of cards with linear equations to be solved. Participants had to switch to the secondary task for at least three times per game. In this study, a new condition was added in the form of a different secondary task, which was entirely optional. An increase in pupil size was found in both conditions in the moment before the switch. There was no significant difference between the conditions, which indicates that deliberate planning was not part of the decision process causing the pupil dilation.
