Abstract

Cancer stem cells are considered to be a small subpopulation of cancer which are thought to be responsible for the initiation and maintenance of cancer. These cancer stem cells are considered to be resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy and seem to be important in the relapse of cancer. However, there is a lot of controversy about this topic. Some aspects are difficult to prove and therefore it becomes uncertain if cancer stem cells exist or not. The cancer stem cell model states that there is a hierarchy present within tumors. A small subpopulation of cells should be the cancer stem cells which are on top of the hierarchy and have a self-renewal system like normal stem cells.
