Abstract

The Ocean Grazer is a novel ocean energy collection and storage device, which can adapt to the incoming waves. It is designed by the University of Groningen to extract and store ocean energy. The system can extract wave energy by pumping water from a low reservoir to a higher reservoir by which potential energy is added. These pumps are connected to floaters which are set in motion by the ocean waves. This potential energy can be extracted at any time by multiple turbines. The current phase of development is all about the proof of concept. In this thesis, a controller is designed which enables the ocean grazer Group to run better experiments on their experimental setup. The experimental setup is used in the proof of concept phase to validate various models. In this experimental setup the waves are simulated with an induction motor, but this motor can only produce pure sinusoidal signals. To run better experiments the simulated waves should be more realistic, so a controller is designed to enable the motor to simulate waves with a changing amplitude and period.
