Abstract

The Ocean Grazer is a device that is currently being developed at the University of Groningen. It extracts sustainable energy from sea waves by pumping water from a lower basin into an upper basin. Electricity is generated by letting the water in the upper basin flow back to the lower basin through turbines. This research project provides insight in how the optimal turbine capacity for the Ocean Grazer can be determined and how turbines should be chosen. Wave data from locations relevant for the Ocean grazer has been analysed and several electricity markets have been studied. To determine how the total turbine capacity in MW relates to possible revenues several production algorithms have been developed. A breakeven point for the total capacity turns out to be very sensitive to a number of variables. The method however, should remain applicable in the future.
