Abstract

CT images contain information about photon attenuation which is expressed in Hounsfield units. This information can be used to calculate the effective atomic number en electron density which in turn are used to calculate proton stopping powers for the use in proton therapy. As the Hounsfield unit depends on the CT X-ray spectrum, it is usefull to know how the Hounsfield unit responds to variations in this spectrum. The effect of a translated spectra and a spectrum with a varying aspect ratio between the brehmstrahlung continiuum and the characteristic X-rays have been investigated for 5 human tissues in this thesis. Knowledge about the deviations in the Hounsfield unit gives a better insight in the uncertainties in the effective atomic number and electron density caused by variations in the CT X-ray spectrum.
