Abstract

Services on the internet are generally centralized. Users of these services are suffering in at least three ways. First, users have to trust the providers of these services with their data. Providers might get hacked, get used as surveillance control points, or shut down. Users might get eavesdropped, the data of the users might get stolen or lost. Second, the infrastructure, protocols and services on the web are not designed to preserve the privacy of end users. Third, the success of these services results increased server loads which can result in downtime. The website reddit.com is a typical link sharing website. It suffers from server overload due to its popularity, and can take down smaller websites with its flash crowds. Furthermore, recent events have shown that a limited number of individuals have enormous control power over the content on Reddit. In this work a novel approach is presented, using blockchain, BitTorrent, and distributed hash table technologies, to solve the before-mentioned issues. The work is a small step towards a framework for creating decentralized applications.
