Abstract

The heterostructure of the insulating oxide perovskites LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 has a conducting interface, with a so-called 2-dimensional electron gas. The origin of this 2DEG is still unclear: it could be caused by oxygen vacancies or by an electronic reconstruction as result of polar catastrophe or a combination even. By using different (quasi-) substrates, other than the easily reduced SrTiO3, both origins are tested for their validity. The perovskite CaTiO3, for example, which has similar properties as SrTiO3, but a slightly distorted crystal structure, influences the properties of the 2DEG if it is implemented in the LAO/STO heterostructure. The results might show that crystal structure is also an important factor in the formation of a high-mobility electron gas.
