Abstract

A simulation model is designed to predict the quality deterioration of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) along a small scale LNG distribution network. The model integrates a thermodynamic model of LNG evaporation and a Methane Number calculator along with logistical aspects of supply and demand of LNG in order to identify the effect LNG quality has on logistical and infrastructural decisions in an LNG distribution network. The results from the model suggest that in the early development stages of low demand and long storage times for LNG, of SSLNG networks, Methane Number can drop significantly in the end of the SSLNG distribution value chain resulting in an out-of spec product that can cause loss of efficiency to engines and even accidents. This risk indicates the potential need to monitor LNG quality in storage and transportation and adjust infrastructural and logistical decisions to ensure the delivery of a safe and quality product to the end user.
