Abstract

This thesis presents the study of a 3D single screw extruder model. Mass transfer including chemical reaction is considered in a novel approach using shear-thinning (Carreau) and shear-thickening models (UVM) programmed in COMSOL. The differences between the two rheological models were investigated in two different screw geometries, using a fixed pitch, and a variable pitch. Results show that considering only shear-thinning underestimates some crucial parameters such as pressure, thermal profile and residence time distribution compared to the shear-thickening fluid, due to differences in the velocity field and rheology. The variable pitch geometry exhibits some peculiarities such as constant residence time distribution regardless the rheological model which we deem needs further investigation. This work provides the first steps in further advances in 3D modelling of extrusion processes, by considering and evaluating more detailed physics and corresponding boundary conditions.
