Abstract

The "Robot-Einstein'', as it was called by some newspapers in 1937, was a device made by MIT civil engineer John B. Wilbur. It could solve a 9-by-9 linear system faster than any conventional method of its time. Wilbur called it the Simultaneous Calculator. However, after mysteriously disappearing from the museum it was placed in, the Calculator didn't receive the attention it deserved. Even though the device is overshadowed by today's modern computers in terms of speed and efficiency, the concept remains interesting and might even serve an educational purpose. The machine still took ~3 hours to operate for 9-by-9 systems, making it difficult to analyze its behavior. We simulated the Calculator's process in MatLab, toyed with various features to analyze the device's behavior, and we investigated how it represents several properties of linear systems.
