Abstract

Understanding the entirety of the living cell is one of the main challenges in cell biology. A very interesting way to do this, is to build an artificial cell from the bottom-up; starting with smaller particles and onstructing a cell with them. In this review some of the latest developments as well as traditional methods in synthetic biology will we discussed and compared. Three integral parts of the cell are used as a guideline, namely the plasma membrane, cell organelles, and the cytoskeleton. It was found that many different ways can be used for artificial cell biology, but most rely on partly natural, partly synthetic systems. The creation of a completely functioning artificial eukaryotic cell is not yet realized, but may be achieved in the future.
