Abstract

Dimethylsulphoniopropionate, or in short DMSP, is a compound produced and used by, among others, phytoplankton. With their production they are able to influence global climate patterns, as DMSP can be broken down to dimethyl sulfide, a climate-active substance causing cloud formation. The phytoplankton production of DMSP is in turn dependent on their environment. These processes make the phytoplankton an interesting topic regarding current climate issues of global warming and sea level rise. Certain environmental circumstances can cause the phytoplankton to produce more or less DMSP and lysing it into the product of dimethyl sulfide, DMS. In this overview the current proposed mechanisms of production and lysis are evaluated, emphasising the use of DMSP and most importantly its breakdown product, DMS, to the producer itself. The theories of overflow echanism and antioxidant have the most prominent role in the DMSP and DMSP-lyase activity, of which the overflow hypothesis is in correspondence with the majority of the findings.
