Abstract

The Dutch government is set to reduce its CO2 emission to 60 per cent of the 1990 level in the year 2020 and increase the share of sustainable energy to 20%. Decentralized electricity production (DEP), i.e. photovoltaic panels or micro-chps at households, has been found to be beneficial to both these goals. This thesis set out to select the best method to reduce CO2 and increase the amount of sustainable energy using DEP. In this thesis three designs for control of the electricity flow within a neighbourhood have been created and tested using a simulation model. These designs have been created from stakeholders’ wishes and converted designs proposed by the industry. The designs are not specifically aimed at sustainability but on the existing value chain. This way designs are not only CO2 beneficial but also have a viable economical foundation. Based on the results obtained from the simulation model some surprising conclusions can be drawn about the effects of active control on DEP and the origin of CO2 emission in the Netherlands.
