Abstract

After a total laryngectomy it is no longer possible to speak by using the vocal cords. To enable laryngectomies to speak in a way that sounds as natural as possible, a Voice Producing Element (VPE) was developed. The VPE will be placed in the Groningen button, a tracheoesophageal shunt valve. Different types of VPEs have been created, but unfortunately not one of them was perfect. The biggest challenge in designing a VPE is getting it to produce frequencies that are sufficiently low, to make sure it produces the same frequencies as a normal human voice. In this project prototypes were fabricated to test different concepts. The test results showed that the frequencies were lower when a piece of foam, filled with water, was placed on the vibrating membrane and when the membrane was fixed in a specific angle.
