Abstract

The order of discretization can make a huge difference in the dynamics of a model. Unfortunately, no general rule exists which decides on the order of discretization, and the appropriate order may depend upon specific features of the model. For my master thesis I aim to find out which resolution should be used to describe the dynamics of the underlying equations adequately, and at the same time keep the dimension of the model as low as possible. The main research question therefore is: How does the dynamics of a discretized partial differential equation (PDE) model depend on the resolution of the discretization? The idea is to address the problem by means of two case studies, namely the Lorenz model for traveling waves in the atmosphere and the barotropic vorticity equation for atmospheric flow over a mountain. I explain how the dynamical solutions of the models change when the resolution is increased and support these results with an error analysis, describing how close the discretized model is to the PDE model.
