Abstract
The possible application of two new methods in the behavioral research field is reviewed. The two techniques which are reviewed are Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADD) and Optogenetics. In conclusion, both optogenetic approaches and usage of DREADDs appear to be very useful in behavioral animal research. Both methods have certain downsides, for which modifications might be required. However optogenetics already has proven itself to be a widely used technique which allows researchers to investigate direct relationships between neuron activation or inhibition and behavior. The application of DREADD has not yet been so widespread as optogenetics, however, the first proof-of-principle studies have been performed both in mice and rats, indicating that also this technique can become a standard in neurological (behavioral) science.
