Abstract

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a large burden on both society as well as the people afflicted by this disorder. The activities of the monoaminergic neurotransmitters systems, especially the serotonergic neurotransmitter system, are lowered in MDD patients. MDD patients also show increased activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-1β. In this thesis I will provide a link between the increased activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines and serotonergic neurotransmitter system.
