Abstract
This research project improves the Ocean Grazer by designing an activation mechanism that selectively activates pistons to achieve adaptability to different-sized waves. Starting with the requirements, a function structure captures the required functionality of the design. Working principles that could fulfil each sub-function are listed and the most appropriate ones are combined to form 4 working structures. These working structures are evaluated on the requirements using a systematic and verifiable selection procedure. From this results a principle solution variant that is worked out as an embodiment design. Structural analysis using SolidWorks simulation is performed to optimise the design. This analysis is verified for the most important components analytically. Further research on the activation mechanism is required to validate the design with a prototype to predict performance if the artifact were implemented in the real-world problem context.
