Abstract
Silverton Engineering is a company in Pretoria, South Africa that produces automotive parts. It was found that one of the causes of the company’s OEE being lower than desired is that the current average changeover time at the Six Big Presses of this company is too high, being 2 hours, 20 minutes and 16 seconds. The goal of this research was to redesign the current changeover processes so that the new average changeover time is at most 1 hour. A redesign is proposed, concerning converting internal tasks to external and improving the time needed for removing and installing the holding parts. This redesign involves a SMED implementation and changes in the holding mechanisms. The result of this redesign is that the average changeover times at the Six Big Presses of Silverton Engineering drops to 46 minutes and 17 seconds, meeting the research goal. This major drop in average changeover time at these presses also resulted in a rise in the overall OEE of Silverton Engineering of 0.5%.
