This paper presents the development of a Decision Support System(DSS) for Stowing containers on a Barge ship. Although, many existing papers have described and solved the container stowing problem (CSP) for ocean container ships, research on the CSP on barge ships is limited. Currently, stowage planners at the terminal in Veghel face problems with proposing a stowage plan with high capacity utilization, while meeting several stowage criteria. With a recently developed mathematical model for stowing Barge ships, a complete Decision Support System for the terminal in Veghel has been designed. This is done by extending the existing model and subsequently developing a user-friendly Interface for the Decision Support System and connecting this to the model and database. The implementation of the Decision Support System would significantly improve the container stowage process in terms of time efficiency and barge ship capacity utilization. However, implementation of the DSS involves multiple serious hurdles.
