Abstract
The Groninger Energiekoepel (GrEK) aims to assist more cooperatives in developing solar parks, even in areas of the Groningen province with a congested grid at moments of peak supply. Therefore, they would like to examine the possibility of using battery storage for short term storage. In this report, a model is made for battery selection and the projected usage/ costs for each battery type is calculated. However, it is not possible to have a cost eff ective battery storage system. Peak curtailment, where the energy is not send to the grid, can be a preferable alternative. Curtailment does not require investments such as batteries. Batteries can become viable in the future, but battery prices need to drop signi ficantly. Furthermore, batteries have signi ficant environmental e ffects, because mining and production are energy and greenhouse gas intensive processes.
