Abstract
Immunosenescence is one of the key features of mammalian aging and comprises both degenerative and adaptive changes in the composition and function of the immune system. The kinase mTOR is an important regulator of numerous immune processes, however its level of activity presents a strong negative correlation with longevity. This places the mTOR pathway at the intersection between aging and immunity, which makes it a good starting point for investigating the molecular mechanisms of immunosenescence. The present essay covers the roles of mTOR in the maintenance and responses of the immune system and explores their potential involvement in various aspects of immune aging. This approach aims to determine whether the mTOR pathway could serve as a promising target for modulating immune processes in the elderly for regenerative and therapeutic purposes.
