Abstract
Cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator modulators represent a revolution in the treatment of cystic fibrosis. Although the impact of these modulators has been well documented on respiratory function, pulmonary exacerbations and quality of life, the effect on extra-pulmonary complications remains unclear. This thesis will review the current available knowledge on the effect of cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator modulators on cystic fibrosis-related complications in the digestive system, which represent a major morbidity of cystic fibrosis. This involves effects on both exocrine and endocrine function of the pancreas, followed by effects on the intestinal tract and hepatobiliary system. Even though many of the evaluated studies report improvements of symptoms in the digestive system after modulator therapy, most of the evidence is low due to the small study size or the lack of control groups. Although evidence is limited, the outcomes may form the basis for future research, evaluating effects of CFTR modulators on cystic fibrosis-related digestive system complications.
