Abstract

How can the topic of radio astronomy be made approachable to a younger audience and what role can VLASS data play in this? In the Astronomy Bachelor’s research project Preparing VLA Sky Survey data for Education and Outreach, a lesson kit on radio astronomy using VLASS data has been developed. The kit is aimed at middle school students and consists of a set of three lessons including exercises, teacher notes with answer key and differentiation options and, a computer lab where actual VLASS datasets are used. This thesis presents the motivation and theory behind the lesson kit. It details the steps taken in the design and development process and, discusses the possibilities and limitations of the final product.
