Abstract
This project investigates whether cosmic rays initiate lightning from a statistical point of view. In the literature on the physics of lightning, several hypothesis have been put forward to explain the mechanisms taking place during lightning initiation, without any conclusive results. To statistically interpret data, a lightning detection algorithm was developed in order to spot the presence of lightning in cosmic ray data. We used the Direct Storage Mode of LOFAR (LOw Frequency ARray) to use Transient Buffer Boards (TBBs) data. A correlation between cosmic ray events followed by lightning inception was found. However the significant limitations of the experimental setting and several unknown parameters prevent us to strongly claim that cosmic rays do initiate lightning.
