Abstract
Microalgae show an enormous potential as a feedstock for numerous bioproducts. The ability of algae to convert CO2 into useful products increases the sustainability of the industrial region. Chlorella vulgaris, one of the limited microalgae approved for human consumption, shows promise to be used as a sustainable protein substitute due to its high protein content. In the current work a echnoeconomic evaluation is performed on the production of Chlorella vulgaris on a 40 hectare scale and the mild extraction of a carbohydrate rich fraction and a functional protein rich fraction through acid precipitation. The protein concentration of the main product, the protein rich fraction, was 63%. The economic evaluation of two refinement scenarios, immediate refinement and the introduction of a drying step, resulted in a maximum ROI of 37% over 30 years.
