Abstract

Currently, the dome control software for the Blaauw Observatory assumes that the telescope is located in the center of the dome. This causes the dome to significantly obstruct the telescope, autoguider, and finderscope, particularly in the eastern part of the sky, which is detrimental to the science results that can be obtained with the Gratama telescope. In this thesis, we developed a method to quantify the aperture obstruction by the dome, and using that method, determine the optimal position for the dome given the orientation of the Gratama telescope, such that the telescope is never obstructed by the hemispherical dome. In addition, with the method we developed, the dome does no longer have to move continuously, as long as the telescope tracks an object with fixed right ascension and declination, which is beneficial, because previously, whenever the dome would move, it would interfere with other electronic at the Blaauw Observatory, such as the CCD.
