Abstract

Looking at all different modifications using physio-chemical research coming from MD and liposome experiments, as well as research regarding both the long term survival strategies and short term adaptations in the Archaea exhibiting these adaptations allows us to piece together different ways in which each modification is used by different species of archaea and why. This paper investigates the interrelation of various modifcations like hydroxylation and unsaturation, which are mainly employed in cold and saline environments to maintain a fluid membrane, and macrocyclic archaeol, GDGT, cyclopentane and cyclohexane rings which are mainly employed in hot and acidic environments to maintain an impermeable membrane. Besides this, a large question remains why many of these seemingly extremophilic adaptations are also found in mesophillic settings. This paper finds mesophillic Thaumarchaeota likely maintain a highly impermeable membrane to minimize wasteful ion cycling in order to survive in extremely nutrient poor conditions.
