Abstract
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas is recently being used for recreational purposes as it induces a “high” feeling. The Dutch government is planning to ban the recreational use of nitrous oxide. However, not much is known about its biological effects on the human body. This essay will try to investigate if nitrous oxide should be prohibited based on its biological effects. The characteristics of the gas, together with its action mechanism, effects on the brain and possible addictive potential are taken into account. Because the duration of exposure and the dose of nitrous oxide are important factors when considering the biological effects, it does not seem necessary to ban the use of this drug. Instead, informing users about the risks just like with alcohol and tobacco, might be a more effective solution.
