Abstract

Natural products remain a vital source of new drugs. The supply of novel compounds seems to have dried up, a perfect storm in combination with the ride of anti-microbial resistance. Genome mining has shown that novel compounds can be found in many places. By deeply analysing known microbed or by surveying novel uncultured microbed. Novel microbes with novel biosynthetic potential are often found in places with high biodiversity, such as the rainforest, which are threatened. There are many reasons to preserve biodiversity; this essay argues from a natural product perspective it makes good sense to preserve biodiversity.
