Abstract
Ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers are essential in research labs, but their high energy consumption poses economic and environmental challenges. This study examines ULT freezers in the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), assessing inventory, energy usage, refrigeration and cooling systems, and exploring energy reduction alternatives. The research utilizes a literature review, energy measurements, and user surveys. Results show that FSE owns around 60 ULT freezers, with 41 analyzed. Inventory analysis provides crucial information for further examination. Energy assessment reveals variations in usage across models and temperatures, highlighting improvement opportunities. Most ULT freezers at the University of Groningen use high-GWP refrigerants. Surveys indicate increased awareness of energy-efficient freezers, with financial incentives as potential solutions. The study emphasizes the importance of reducing ULT freezer energy consumption and proposes measures to achieve it. Implementation can significantly reduce costs and environmental impact.
