Abstract

After reintroduction, beavers have started to build dams in the Drentsche Aa river catchment. Whilst this can have positive effects for local biodiversity, there is also the possibility that the dams interfere with established nature goals in the area, as described in the Water Framework Directive and the Habitats Directive. This means that there is a conflict between the beavers and the established nature goals, and a choice has to be made on how to handle this conflict going forward. To make this choice an informed and futureproof decision, the Waterschap Hunze en Aa's has asked me to first give an overview of the literature regarding the impact of beavers on their habitat, especially in systems with low height differences, and an overview of their impact on the existing nature goals. They have also asked me to look into management options for the Drentsche Aa to comply to all existing targets/goals. I have combined this data to describe different scenarios in which different levels of beaver impacts were allowed. The pros and cons of the different scenarios were weighed and an implementation plan describing which actions to take next, based on the best scenario, has been developed.
