Abstract

Parkinson's disease is a slow progressive disease characterized by a range of motor and non-motor symptoms that impair the quality of life. The concept of PD has shifted from a central nervous system disease to a multi-system disease, which includes impairments in the central, autonomic, and enteric nervous systems. This hypothesizes that the gut microbiome plays an important role in the pathogenesis of PD and increases potential therapeutic possibilities. There is still no proven diet suitable to reverse or slow down the progression of PD, however there are some studies using the ketogenic diet as one of these dietary approaches. The aim of this review is to summarize the role of KD in the different stages and symptoms of PD, considering recent findings related to the microbiota-gut-brain axis.
