Abstract
The Congo Basin's tropical rainforests are globally vital ecosystems, crucial for climate regulation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. Covering less than 5% of the global land area, these forests store about 25% of terrestrial carbon and contribute 33% of the world's net primary production. Protected areas (PAs) aim to safeguard these ecosystems, but their effectiveness in preserving biodiversity and genetic diversity remains underexplored. This thesis investigates the role of PAs in the Congo Basin in conserving ecological and genetic diversity through a literature review evaluating species richness, genetic diversity, and conservation strategies.
