Abstract
The relationship between zooplankton in the Arctic region is poorly understood. This is particularly due to the region’s extreme environmental conditions, such as the limited presence of light during the year, little precipitation, and low temperatures that, in winter, cover the area with snow and ice. In this paper, we analyze data that was collected during the summer seasons between 2018 and 2024 in shallow freshwater ponds. In particular, we used redundancy analysis to find the main environmental drivers of zooplankton, which turn out to be conductivity, pH, and depth (but not temperature). Moreover, we performed spatial analysis on the data, where we proved that there are significant spatial structures that, however, cannot be traced back to the sampled environmental variables. Lastly, we study whether kriging can be a useful method for predicting diversity at a given pond by training a model that incorporates all studied years via a spatial trick.
