Abstract
This project performed a dietary analysis on faecal samples collected from the Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) during the non-breeding season using DNA metabarcoding. The aim of this project was to explore if a habitat shift from forest to savannah during the season shown by the Flycatchers is visible in their diet. Through the use of plant DNA present in the faeces through secondary predation this project also attempts to perform a bitrophic analysis on the arthropods and plants present in the diet. Testing the abundance of certain plants identified as originating from the savannah or forest in the samplesearly in the season against late in the season showed what seems to be a shift towards the savannah later in the season as expected. The bipartite analysis resulted in a proof of concept network that provided some interesting insights In host plant dynamics.
