Abstract
Microchannel plates (MCPs) are widely used for the detection of low flux ions in various experimental settings, including surface science and plasma physics. Their detection efficiency strongly depends on the impact velocity of incoming ions. This thesis investigates the detection efficiency of an MCP for low-energy ions (He+, He2+, Ar+, Xe+) conducted at the Zernike Low-Energy Ion Beam Facility (ZERNIKELEIF) at the University of Groningen. Both indirect and direct measurement approaches were used. The indirect method utilized spectra of ions scattering of a surface. With the direct method, the ion beam goes directly into a electrostatic analyzer and MCP. For He+ and He2+, detection efficiency remained constant above an impact energy of approximately 1.5 keV and sharply decreased below this energy, agreeing with previous findings from Krems et al. The Xe+ detection efficiency measurements showed a similar trend as findings from Krems et al., but deviations were observed as well. A comparison between the indirect and direct approach demonstrated that direct measurements yield higher resolution and accuracy, due to less factors influencing measurements. These results provide preliminary detection efficiency curves for He+, He2+ and Xe+ and address the necessity of MCP-specific detection efficiency measurements for accurate low-energy ion detection as deviations from previous findings were found.
