Abstract

As the Netherlands accelerates toward a net-zero electricity system, the intermittency of renewable energy sources creates a critical need for dispatchable, low-carbon generation capacity. This research evaluates the techno-economic viability of hydrogen co-firing in gas-fired power plants as a transitional strategy to ensure security of supply during periods of low renewable output. A Technical Readiness Map anyalisis, Short Run Marginal Cost modeling and CO2 abatement cost analysis were performed. The reusults reveal a significant discrepancy between technical readiness and economic efficiency. While modern gas turbines are technically capable of handling hydrogen blends of 30%, the economic analysis demonstrates that hydrogen co-firing is structurally uncompetitive under current market conditions. However, despite poor cost-efficiency, hydrogen co-firing remains a strategic necessity for the Dutch grid as a scalable solution for seasonal balancing. Consequently, the role of hydrogen co-firing should be framed not as a bulk decarbonization tool, but as a specialized reliability asset.
