Abstract
The NEXT project is aimed at performing high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A central detector in the NEXT setup is the Micron Semiconductor BB7 double-sided silicon detector (DSSD), which is used to detect implanted ions and measure the energies of emitted α-particles. To ensure reliable signal digitization and α-energy measurements, the response of the DSSD prior to beam time must be characterized under realistic operating conditions. This thesis presents an experimental characterization of the DSSD using an external radium-223 α-source. The detector response is studied with respect to temperature stability of the digitized α-energies, individual strip energy calibration, and the influence of the applied reverse-bias voltage on signal properties. Overall, the DSSD can be calibrated under operating conditions using a high-activity source, but its response to temperature variations and reverse-bias voltage remains insufficiently characterized, requiring dedicated repeat measurements prior to beam time. Keywords: NEXT, strip silicon detector, nuclear physics, Ra-223 alpha spectroscopy, reverse-bias voltage, calibration, temperature dependence
